Food banks in Wales

There’s been a lot to process over the last couple of years – from Brexit to a pandemic and a war with global ramifications, the consequences to our everyday lives have been staggering. We are seeing too many families being driven into poverty, struggling to pay energy bills, to cope with the rising cost of living and to make ends meet. Food banks have witnessed a record number of referrals.

Because our communities are the lifeblood of our work, we joined forces with Green Man in 2022 and together donated £13,000 to local food banks around Wales. From Brecon to Merthyr Tydfil, Cardiff to Pontypool, Newtown to Talgarth and Cwmbran, our donations were the equivalent of 6,500 meals and 2,166 days of food on the table and directly helped 722 families.

Here are some of the people we helped who wanted to say thank you…

Thank you for this extremely generous donation from the Green Man Trust. We are so grateful for your support. It will certainly be a help to us through these challenges as we support those in need across the City of Cardiff. Thank you again for this donation and also for your ongoing wider support for the wider community. – Mark Tugwell, Logistics Manager Cardiff Food Bank

Thank you so much to the Green Man Trust for your generous donation. We are so grateful that you have chosen to support us in these difficult times. We have been giving out more food than is coming in recently, and so it will mean that we can completely restock our shelves. – Kate Hooton, Manager Abergavenny Food Bank

Without support we would not exist. (…) Over the last few weeks we have seen the number of people using our food bank increase due to the loss of the £20 per week Universal Credit and, more recently, the increase in the cost of fuel, which is really hitting poorer families and causing more homelessness than ever before. Your donation will go a long way in securing our ability to continue to help our clients in future years, whatever comes our way. So once again, thank you – Mike Brain, Managing Trustee Monmouth and District Foodbank

Your generous donation of £2,000 will benefit many local people in crisis in Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Mountain Ash. As you can imagine with the rising of the living costs, cuts to UC and fuel crisis more people will be coming through our doors for help. Your generosity, which we appreciate very much, will allow us to support them. – Cleide Correia, Project Manager Merthyr Cynon Foodbank
